Untold Stories of Forgotten Dogs/ Sunny Boys "Choko"

By Meanbeam

This story is about a dog called Sunny Boys "Choko" and his parents. "Choko" was bred by JB from stock he acquired from Limey Kennels at the time. JB had a male out of "Spike" x "Tug" called "Chester", and bred him to a triple inbred "Nelis" bitch called "Flakey", also Limey stock. "Chester" was litter brother to Ch."Alligator", "Preudens", "Dillinger", "Miss Fox" and others. "Flakey" was litter sister to Springviews "Beauty". "Chester" was put on contract by JB into a dog called Ch."Blinky" (from the book Legacy Of Gameness from Rocca). In the book, a mistake is put on paper, as it says that "Chester" quit in that show? Nothing could be further from the truth, as the story was told by a man who never saw this show, but bought "Blinky" later. "Chester" was a troublemaker stirring up the whole yard of JB all of the time, and got a serious shoulder problem in the second week of the pre-keep. JB being pissed off a bit, said "well I'm going to bring him in on weight and fit or not, let's see if he can shoot some trouble in the box, instead of in my yard and so he did. 5 weeks later, he was in the box, off the chain, into the "Blinky" dog. "Chester" might and probably would have gotten away with it, if he was into a lesser dog, but "Blinky" was just too much for him. U+S Kennels recognising his quality and gameness offered $3000 for him after the loss, but he was not sold.

O.K. the mother of Sunny Boys "Choko", the "Flakey" bitch. She was bred by Limey Kennels and sent to JB as a gift. She was bred as follows, Nelis x Tug produced Ch. "Dutch" she was bred back to "Nelis" to produce Ch. "Neilson"(ROM) "Popeye" (ROM) and "Nipper" and another bitch. "Nipper" was bred back to "Nelis" again to produce "Flakey" and Springviews "Beauty". "Beauty", who I seen once was a poor conformation bitch, undershot, and donkey back which is normal when bred that way. However, I have heard she showed extreme gameness in a show. "Flakey" was looked at and JB didn't feel she was a show bulldog, as she could not take the pressure he gave her on her shoulders (not mentally, but physically) He put her on the yard of Mr Bulldog and said "leave her as she is, because she is a gift to me and should not be sold". However, Mr Bulldog sneakily sold her after a while to some friends of B.Hall, which names I cannot recall right now. "Flakey" was agreed to be matched in Texas into...AND THIS WILL BE A SURPRISE...INTO COY AND THE MOTHER OF GR.CH. "BANJO" AND GR.CH. "BB RED". The ref was Bobby Smith (R.I.P.) who reported the show in his magazine the "Face Your Dogs". At the the end of the show which lasted 1.24 min, the mother of Gr. Ch. "Banjo" and "BB Red" quit and took the count on her time to scratch.... making "Flakey" the winner.

Bobby Hall shouted that she was the baddest bitch is Texas. I know this news will be something of a stir up, as this is not known to many people. That today's Texas (finest) was beat by a European inbred brood bitch bred by Limey Kennels! O.K., her son Sunny Boys "Choko" won one show and was then lined up into another USA dog from Danny Burtons hands called "The Mechanic" who won 3 (shown by Burton) and was in the hands of the Pied Piper, who sent him overseas to be shown, if I'm not mistaken by the Bross Brothers. "Choko" was in the hands of the Sunny Boys who were very nice people to be around with, but not familiar about the conditioning aspect of the game (to put it out mildly). "Choko" was into a furious show with "The Mechanic" and both dogs went toe to toe. "Choko" finally was victorious in about 2.0 hours. "Choko" was run over by a tractor several months later and broke his hips and hind legs. After he had surgery and was healed up, they put him on contract one more time.

At the time of the conditioning it was wintertime and "Choko" could not be walked nor run the mill due to his former accidental damage playing up. Therefore, they decided to swim him, which was a big mistake. As it was wintertime, he developed a mild case off pneumonia and he was YES as his daddy put in the box anyway. This time he lost in short order, which cannot be blamed on the dog really. The rumour goes that his mother "Flakey" ended up on Burtons yard! The moral of this story: there is many a good dog out there better than known Champion dogs. Even losers who are better than known Ch. dogs, that don't get the recognition they deserve and/or are forgotten, like "Flakey", "Chester" and their son "Choko", who were a Limey bred gene pool, only known to a handful of people.

"Kilwilkie Lad"

This is a tale from the 1960's when life was much different and far less complicated for working dogs and their owners. In those not-so-far-off days the Irish Kennel Club organised working trials for Terriers in two distinct categories, "Strong Dogs" and "Sounders". Both were tests against live quarry - the Badger. Both were well organised in a sportsmanlike manner and both took place with very strict rules and under public scrutiny.

"Kilwilkie Lad" was a "Strong Dog", a first rate Badger dog. Supreme in many trials, he gained a host of awards but was equally at home working out in the field, in natural conditions.

My grandfather, James Creaney, was at a hunt in Southern Ireland with the Terrier Club. They had a great days sport, and as they often did, stopped at a pub on their way home to enjoy a pint and to discuss the days events. The pub was in Dundalk, a working dog stronghold, and my grandfather was offered a Staffordshire bitch. He would never buy on impulse, he was a market dealer by trade, and he would wait and haggle. But anyway, he bought the bitch and, bringing her home that night, kennelled her in the yard.

Two weeks later the club were out locally and James tried the bitch, but she showed no interest at all, and he thought that he'd been caught with a 'dud' dog. Weeks passed, until one day at a market being held at a local fair, he spotted a lad with an English Bull Terrier. Naturally enough, he engaged the youth in conversation to find out all that he could about the dog and discovered that it was a full bred pedigree dog, which belonged to the boys mother. James made it his business to go and see her about having a service for his bitch and the woman agreed, asking a small fee instead of the usual pup from the litter.

In due time the Stafford bitch whelped eight pups, most of which were purchased by other club members. Harry, my grandfathers brother, ended up with the last of the pups and took it home to his wife Annie, who looked after it and treated it like a child of the house.

As time passed the dog grew strong and powerful, and James and his friend Ned took it out to see if it would kill rats. The dog was almost two years of age and had a great temperament. Anyway, They put Harry's dog into a barrel with two live rats and it made no attempt to kill them. I have heard it said, that a terrier that doesn't kill rats isn't much of a dog, but certainly in this case that proved to be a load of rubbish. James and Ned, probably disappointed, took the dog back home to Harry.

Two months later the club were out hunting and Harry was there with the dog, and you can be sure that he had to endure a great deal of taunting and comment over the strong dog that wouldn't kill a rat. Such news travelled fast in the working dog world.

As the day progressed, two foxes were dug out and Harry was offered the chance to start his dog on one of them. He entered the dog with the club members all watching and the dog took a hold on the fox at the head and immediately killed it outright. The members were amazed and silenced to see what had happened and the dog drew the dead fox from the earth, refusing to part with his prize. With great difficulty, he was eventually removed from the carcass and during the whole process he had made no sound at all. Later, this was to become his hallmark and during his whole career Harry never once heard the dog make any sound while working. This, of course, meant that he was ideally suited for the strong dog trials.

As the name suggests, the trials for "Sounders" were a contest for the more usual, earth working, baying Terriers. While being tried these dogs had to continually give tongue, to stop doing so was to fail the test. But for the "Strong Dogs", catch dogs really, the reverse applied. They had to enter the earth and remain, working all the time but never making the slightest sound while doing so. If they also succeeded in drawing the Badger from the earth, then so much the better. It was a test of sheer gameness before the mighty Badger. "Patch" or more formally, "Kilwilkie Lad" won many cups, trophies and certificates. He was entered as a full bred dog, for the trials, organised by the Irish Kennel Club, were for the benefit of pedigree dogs rather than cross breeds. When it was discovered that "Kilwilkie Lad" was an English Bull/Stafford cross he was barred from taking any further part. But he had made his name by then and brought honour and fame to all that were involved with him. It was the end of his Trial career, but he continued to work naturally for many years, until he was retired to enjoy his leisure at home.

Many people sought the service of the famous dog and many bitches were brought to him, but unfortunately he never sired a single pup. He spent his remaining years in comfort, honoured and pampered as one of the family, and it is a fact that game dogs adapt so well to such treatment and enjoy and revel in their place of honour.

The tale of "Kilwilkie Lad" has a sad and mysterious ending. "Patch" had grown old and sick and could hardly walk, and Harry had let the dog out of the house to lie in the garden. He was never seen again.! Somehow, he had left the confines of the garden and vanished. Harry searched for many weeks but no trace of him was ever found and the circumstances of his disappearance have remained a mystery ever since. Harry still has very fond memories of his tremendous dog and shows great pride each and every time he talks about his old warrior favourite - "Kilwilkie Lad"

(In respect of this article and its references to badger drawing, it is worth pointing out that at these trials the badgers were returned or released unharmed after the days events were completed. The Irish Kennel Club, which organised the trials at the time, ensured that this was the case. In our view, events such as these which were held in public and subject to close scrutiny and regulation, were actually what they purported to be....a sport)

Barry Ligget

"Yankee" Notes , I read the story on your site by Barry Ligget about the Kilwickie Lad dog and would like to make a correction to this fine story . The Kilwickie Lad dog when mated to the late Tom Haugheys bitch "Rowdy" produced two of the gamest ever in Haugheys "North Star" who is behind the "Psycho" dog , and in the same litter was the equally famous dog "Blunders Lad" owned by Jerry Mc Intyre . Jerry is a brother to Jerome who owned the "Barney" dog and other great working dogs like "Lance" who was a son of the "Howdy" Red Hand) and a Wheaten bitch . I did correct this mistake when the story appeared in the Earth dog magazine some years ago . "TRUTH-SEEKER"

LIMEY KENNELS NELIS ROM

"Nelis" was born around 1980-1981 and was sired by Mr Bulldog's Champion "Spike" (Hammond's Ch. "Jo"). His dam was Hammond's (Mr. Bulldog's) "Jessy". "Nelis" was one of six pups from the litter, his brother J. B. "Spike Jnr." won one and another "Klinker" lost dead game to a son of Pieter's "Pilot" who outweighed him by six pounds.

His brother "Trouble" was schooled and tested. Sisters "Lucky" and ”Paddy" was schooled and tested hard, and a sister called "Suzy" was said to have quit, yet when bred to Champion Willy Booger and a Rufus / Heinzl dog produced some good ones.

"Nelis" was sold to a man called Van Leeuwen. At eighteen months old he began his career and was brought back to be two-dogged by his sire Champion "Spike" and a half-brother Champion "Ringo". He was then matched into Nico's Champion "Sting" who was out of "Handsome" & "Hot Lips". "Handsome" was out of "Bolio", and "Hot Lips" out of Grand Champion "Hank" Because of a lack of conditioning, bad advice and going two pounds uphill, he lost this contest in a deep game fashion. When the match was over "Nelis" was left dying in the pit.

Mr Golden Eye asked that if he could save the dog, could he then keep him and was told he could. So Mr Golden Eye worked all night to reconstruct the dogs face and ultimately save his life. A few weeks later Mr Golden Eye came back to collect "Nelis" and were told by Mr Bulldog and U & S kennels that they wanted a treadmill for the dog. So, Mr Golden Eye built them a treadmill and returned once again to collect the dog. He was told he could have the dog, but would have to pay two hundred and fifty pounds extra.

He then started making arrangements to bring "Nelis" into the United Kingdom. As the dog was so badly damaged he knew that he couldn't bring him in the conventional way and would therefore have to smuggle him into the country. A small rowing boat with an outboard motor was rented and the North Sea was crossed. Having had to swim the remaining part of the journey Mr Golden Eye changed into some dry clothes and finally walked "Nelis" into the UK.

At the time King Limey had a two-time winning bitch called "Tug", who was a litter sister to Irish Tim's Champion "Lochem", one of the two best match dogs Jack Kelly ever saw? (The other was Tudor's "Spike") "Tug" came out of Curtis's "Fox Jnr." and Uptown's Champion "Snubby". When "Nelis" and "Tug" were bred the mating produced a R. O. M. litter containing Champion "Dutch", Champion "Gnasher", Champion "Smuggler" and "Fatso".

"Nelis" was bred to "Tug" three times and they produced high calibre dogs in every litter. "Nelis" was bred twelve or thirteen times and subsequently produced six Champions. When inbred on his mother Champion "Dutch" produced Champion "Neilson" and "Popeye", who in return are registered R. O. M. dogs. "Nelis" and his ability to reproduce is pure gold. You can cross it with every bloodline and it will produce winners. His inbred son Champion "Neilson" R. O. M. was bred to an English Show Stafford and produced Grand Champion "Bella".
